Five Different Ways to Find the Sun
The best winter escape is not necessarily the hottest. Flight time, hotel setting, evening atmosphere and the balance between resting and exploring can matter just as much as the daytime temperature.

Madeira and La Palma
Madeira: mild days and magnificent landscapes. Madeira suits travellers who want to be outdoors rather than beside a swimming pool every day. Winter conditions are typically mild, with averages around 17°C and warmer periods possible along the southern coast; rain is possible and the mountains can be significantly cooler.

La Palma: the quieter Canary Island. Winter days at coastal level are generally mild, often around 18°C to 22°C, but conditions vary considerably with altitude and across the island.

São Vicente and Santo Antão
Cape Verde is well established as a winter-sun destination, but its islands do not all offer the same experience. Instead of beginning with the beach resorts of Sal or Boa Vista, consider combining culturally energetic São Vicente with the extraordinary mountain landscapes of neighbouring Santo Antão.
Mindelo brings music, colourful streets and a stronger urban rhythm, while Santo Antão is known for steep valleys, remote villages and rewarding walking. Winter is typically warm and dry, often in the mid-20s, although trade winds can be noticeable.
Inter-island travel needs careful planning, particularly when ferries, flights and separate hotel stays are involved. Choose this pairing for culture, hiking and a more exploratory view of Cape Verde.
Muscat and the Mountains
Oman works particularly well during the UK winter, when conditions are more comfortable for exploring than during the intense summer months. Official tourism information describes November to early March as milder and drier, with Muscat averaging around 26°C; the mountains can be considerably cooler.
Begin in Muscat for elegant resorts, the Mutrah waterfront, museums and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Add the Al Hajar Mountains for cooler air, dramatic landscapes and a different pace altogether.

The Gambia: Warmth with a Wider Story

Rather than remaining entirely within the busiest resort areas, consider smaller coastal hotels, nature-led lodges or a carefully arranged journey along the Gambia River. Birdlife, local communities and the country’s complex history offer opportunities to explore, provided experiences are chosen responsibly and with appropriate local guidance.
