Round 1:
Alfa Romeo Championship – Croft
Join me on the exhilarating journey of Round 1 of the Alfa Romeo Championship at Croft Circuit. After the winter break, it was time to return to the track as a loyal supporter. Now, I’m far from being a sports reporter. I’m more of a steadfast presence on the sidelines. I cheer on our drivers alongside family, friends, and fellow supporters. From the eager anticipation of testing to the heart-pounding thrill of the races. For a more detailed review of the events from Croft check out Andy Robinson’s comprehensive review.
Day 1: Testing
4:30 AM, the alarms shattered the silence, signalling the beginning of our journey to Croft Circuit. As we drove to the circuit in the early morning, a sense of anticipation filled the air. Random motivational tunes also played. Upon arrival, the atmosphere was charged with excitement. Cars were unloaded from trailers, and the sound of engines coming to life echoed through the surroundings. Amidst the bustling activity, we had the opportunity to meet a new driver preparing for his first race. His enthusiasm added an extra layer of energy and excitement to the day.
For both drivers and supporters, testing proved to be more than a mere formality. It was a crucial opportunity to refine strategies and acquaint oneself with the nuances of the track. Whenever I have been to Croft it has poured down so all wrapped up I headed over to the Grandstand. Thankfully the rain stayed away!
From here we were able to observe the drivers navigating some of the straights and turns of the circuit. Equipped with my camera, I took the opportunity to learn how to deal with fast-moving cars. Many of my shots are track, I am so glad for digital cameras!! With testing wrapped up, we retreated to the welcoming confines of the Blackwell Grange Hotel.
That evening, we gathered for a meal in Darlington, at a recommended India – Arvellis. It certainly lived up to and exceeded any exception that I had. Considering the restaurant had a couple of large bookings in {including our group} service was extremely prompt and very friendly. While the majority of the discussion over the meal was around cars and the championship. We did manage to sneak in a few life topics as well!
Now this is where I’m slightly annoyed with myself {and also not surprised}. With all the talking {and slight hunger} I completely forgot to take any pictures. Well, apart from the Instagrammable wall decoration at the entrance. Let me assure you the food was packed full of flavour and perfectly sized portions.
Day 2: Qualifying and Race 1
I managed to catch some of the coverage from the Chinese Grand Prix. This was before heading to the track for Scrutineering, Qualifying, and Race 1. Soon after scrutineering it was time for the cars to gather in the Assembly area; preparing for the qualifying session. The air crackled with excitement as engines roared and cars sped around the circuit. From the sidelines, we enthusiastically cheered on our favourite drivers {all of them}.
The track buzzed with activity as cars zoomed by, creating a symphony of sound and colour. Jamie Thwaites stood out for his exceptional performance in his TCR Giulietta {supper sleek machine}. He demonstrated remarkable precision and speed {currently our equivalent to a certain F1 driver, mostly out on his own}. Jamie Porter, a newcomer this year certainly made an impression with his blue 4C. Each manoeuvre and decision contributed to the setting of the starting grid, heightening the excitement for what was to come. As the grid took shape, anticipation grew for the upcoming Race 1.
Race 1 began with a flurry of activity. The anticipation built to a crescendo. The engines roared to life. Despite a moment of confusion at the start {the wrong lights were pressed}, the field set off cleanly. Each car darted forward with precision and purpose. Cars are not my thing. But that blue {I’m sure Alfa has a more official name for the colour} 4C was something else. It had me hooked – and you can see why.
I had my eye on the Twin Spark Cup, particularly the battle between James Ford and Tony Broome. James got off to a great start from his pole position {in class), leaving Toby stuck behind an MR2’s erratic manoeuvres on the first lap {the less we say on the MR2 the better!}. But once Toby cleared the Toyota, he started closing the gap. He set a new class lap record in the process.
The race was intense, with Toby trying his best to catch up. A small hiccup on lap 7 cost him precious time. Despite his efforts, James held onto his lead. He secured a fantastic class win. Further back in the pack, Edward {Ben} put up a strong fight, ultimately clinching a solid third place in class. Unfortunately, Steve Anderson’s debut race didn’t go as planned. A spin on the third lap sent him into the barriers. His race ended prematurely. Both he and the car were fine. As the newbie, he was annoyed at damaging the car. It’s all part of the journey in racing!
Racing complete, drivers and support teams converged at Croft’s newly inaugurated restaurant. We enjoyed a welcoming ambience of camaraderie. We treated ourselves to a well-deserved pizza. It was freshly prepared at the new outlet at Croft Circuit. The atmosphere, though relaxed, pulsated with anticipation for the challenges awaiting us in the battles yet to come. As the evening wore on, we left the restaurant with full bellies. Our hearts were brimming with excitement for the races yet to come.
Day 3: Race 2 and Reflections
Day 3 started with early alarms. We wanted to catch the Chinese Grand Prix before heading back to the track for Race 2. With eyes glued to the unfolding races in Shanghai, I absorbed the adrenaline-pumping excitement of Formula 1. I had immersed myself in the world of motorsport on the global stage. Now, it was time to return to the local track for Race 2 of the Alfa Romeo Championship. Stepping outside, I was greeted by the tranquil beauty of the morning. The soft golden light painted Croft Circuit in a serene glow. Before long it was time to assemble and get ready for some racing!
I watched intently as Paul Plant and Jamie Porter battled it out for second place. The Giulietta relentlessly pursued the 4C, creating an enthralling spectacle on the track. Behind them, Richard Ford faced adversity. He was hit from behind by a BMW. This caused him to lose valuable time and positions. Despite the setback, Richard persevered, eventually finishing in 11th place.
Andy Page rose to 4th place as the race unfolded. Toby Broome closely followed him. Toby had taken the lead in the Twin Spark Cup. Toby’s luck seemed to be changing. A late-race error allowed James Ford to snatch the lead and claim victory by a mere 0.7 seconds. It was a breathtaking battle, with James breaking Toby’s previous lap record in the process. When the checkered flag fell, marking the end of Race 2, a wave of pride washed over us. #78’s remarkable performance secured two impressive 3rd-place finishes in class, a testament to their skill and our unwavering support.
We wrapped up our belongings and said our farewells to Croft Circuit. Reflections of the weekend’s highs and lows lingered in our thoughts. Throughout the event, thoroughly enjoyable interactions prevailed. There was a palpable spirit of camaraderie. This ensured that any on-track battles remained firmly within the realm of friendly elbowing. Despite the radiant sunshine, the need for winter coats served as a reminder of the lingering chill in the air. The days were long but rewarding.
Looking ahead next up is Silverstone (19th May), this time they are out on the National Circuit. With anticipation building, I looked forward to celebrating my birthday weekend. I anticipated the roar of engines and the thrill of competition. If you’re interested in learning more about the Alfa Romeo Championship feel free to contact me for more information.
