London, with its vibrant history and dynamic energy, has always been a city full of excitement. Recently, we watched the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies battle it out. They played an MLB series at London Stadium. It wasn’t just a game for me. It was my first live baseball match. It was also a chance to explore the iconic Olympic Park. London Calling
We arrived in London on Saturday, just in time for the big MLB game. Excitement filled the air as we checked into the Moxy Hotel. We mingled with fellow MLB fans who had flown in to support their teams, in this case, the Phillies. After settling in, we eagerly headed over to London Stadium to immerse ourselves in the pre-game atmosphere.
As we approached the stadium, the energy was palpable. Fans adorned in vibrant team colours bustled around, vendors sold memorabilia, and an undeniable buzz of anticipation filled the air. Taking our seats, we joined the throng of excited fans, eagerly awaiting the start of the game. We all stood proudly for the national anthems of both the USA and the UK. It was a moving tribute to the event’s international spirit.
Play Ball
Before the game commenced, it was the job of Matthew Broderick to pitch the first ball. The stadium buzzed with entertainment. Once the game began, the cheers and chants from the crowd created an electric atmosphere. It was thrilling to be part of such fervent support, cheering on the team as they took to the field. The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, and the shared camaraderie made every moment unforgettable.
As a newcomer to baseball, I found myself learning the nuances of the game as it unfolded. By the 7th inning, things began to click, and the strategic intricacies became clearer. The frequent mid-inning entertainment, though occasionally perplexing, added to the excitement and kept us engaged throughout.
I was struck by the compact size of the playing area. It was reminiscent of a rounders setup. We were astounded by the pitchers’ incredible speed, hurling balls at over 90 miles per hour! Despite my attempt to remain neutral, sporting a NYC t-shirt nudged me towards cheering for them. They faced a disappointing 7-2 loss on Saturday. My spirit was lifted by their thrilling 6-5 victory the following day. The thrilling win redeemed the weekend’s experience.
After the game, we retreated to the Moxy Hotel for the night. We were eager to catch up on other sports events. We searched for bars at Westfield showing the Canadian Qualifying. Alas, none were airing it. As we strolled back to the hotel over the bustling bridge, we glimpsed crowds awaiting trains, numbering in the thousands! Thankfully, our hotel was just a short walk away, offering a serene escape from the bustling city.
The hotel’s vibrant ambience and modern amenities provided the perfect sanctuary after a day of sports excitement. In the lively lobby, we mingled with fellow fans and travellers, sharing stories and reliving game highlights over cocktails. The stylish decor and warm hospitality of the staff made us feel truly at home. It added a touch of luxury to our stay.
Reflecting on our unforgettable MLB London Series experience, we’re already eagerly anticipating our return next year.
