Halloween Around the World: Four Places, Four Different Stories

Folklore, festivities, remembrance and theatrical nights.

A Halloween trip can begin with folklore, a costume or the promise of a lively night out. Yet late October does not mean the same thing everywhere. Ireland connects the season to Samhain; Salem makes it a citywide occasion; Japan embraces theatrical entertainment. In Mexico, Día de los Muertos falls close to Halloween but has its own purpose: remembering loved ones.

Each destination calls for a different kind of journey. The best place to begin is with the story it wants to tell.

Travel note: Event programmes, hotel classifications and availability may change. Check details before booking, and follow local guidance when visiting commemorative events.

Ireland: Follow the Folklore

Halloween’s Irish roots give County Meath an atmosphere that reaches beyond costumes and carved pumpkins. Samhain marked the transition towards winter; today, the Púca Festival brings folklore into the present through music, fire performance and storytelling in Trim and Athboy. Trim’s castle makes a striking starting point for a visit shaped by history as much as spectacle.

Build in a quieter daytime walk before the evening programme, then leave room for a warm meal and a slow morning afterwards. Staying in Trim keeps the town close; choosing a country estate means planning your transport back.

WHERE TO STAY

Trim Castle Hotel · 4 star — A central choice overlooking Trim Castle.

Knightsbrook Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort · 4 star — A Trim base with time for the spa.

The Johnstown Estate · 4 star — A country estate retreat; allow for the journey to Trim.

Salem: Join the October Crowds

Salem, Massachusetts, layers October’s Haunted Happenings festivities over a town with a much deeper story. Costumes and seasonal events bring energy to its streets, but the witch trials deserve thoughtful attention. Pair the celebrations with the Peabody Essex Museum and a reflective pause at the Witch Trials Memorial.

The most satisfying visit leaves space between booked activities: a harbour walk, lunch and time to explore. Boston makes a comfortable base for a wider New England break, although an evening in Salem needs a planned return journey.

WHERE TO STAY

The Langham, Boston · 5 star — A refined Boston base.

Boston Harbor Hotel · 5 star — Waterfront calm after a busy day.

Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street · 5 star — A base for a longer Boston stay.

These three properties are in Boston, not Salem. Plan Salem as a day trip and check the return journey if attending an evening event.

Mexico City: Make Space for Remembrance

Mexico City offers a vivid introduction to Día de los Muertos, a distinct tradition of remembrance rather than a version of Halloween. Flowers, candles, photographs and favourite foods can form part of offerings honouring deceased loved ones. Understanding that meaning makes the colour and craftsmanship more moving.

Give public displays time, seek out local interpretation and ask before photographing personal observances. A city stay also leaves room for galleries, neighbourhood walks and long lunches. Plan around the celebrations you want to attend, while remembering that family and community traditions vary across Mexico.

WHERE TO STAY

Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City · 5 star — A calm courtyard setting.

The Ritz-Carlton, Mexico City · 5 star — Far-reaching views near Chapultepec.

The St. Regis Mexico City · 5 star — Service-led accommodation on Paseo de la Reforma.

Osaka: Enjoy the Spectacle

Osaka approaches the season through entertainment, with Universal Studios Japan offering a theatrical reason to plan an autumn visit. Costumes and carefully staged scares suit travellers who enjoy spectacle, but the city deserves more than a theme-park stop.

Spend another evening among Dotonbori’s illuminated signs, with takoyaki or okonomiyaki on the menu, then slow the pace with time to explore beyond the busiest streets. These central hotels work for a broader Osaka stay; allow for the journey to the park and check event admission separately. A little breathing room makes the contrast between excitement and rest more enjoyable.

WHERE TO STAY

The St. Regis Osaka · 5 star — A central Midosuji address.

Conrad Osaka · 5 star — A stay with elevated river and city views.

The Ritz-Carlton, Osaka · 5 star — Classic luxury in Umeda.
