At the end of last year, I ended up in hospital and was told I would be having surgery and as part of the preperation I had to shrink my liver by following an 800 calorie diet – thankfully I discovered Nutracheck.
After ending up in hospital with pancreatitis, I was told they would be removing my gallbladder and that in order to aid the surgery and recovery I would have to shrink my liver. In order to do that I would have to follow an 800 calorie a day diet two weeks prior to the surgery. The hospital had given me a list of what I could have, but I wanted to make sure I was sticking to the limits.
The search was on.
Prior to my “diet start date”, I reached for my phone and started to look at the various apps available and downloaded a few to try. Whilst they were good, nothing seemed to meet what I wanted. Then I found Nutracheck.
Nutracheck is a top-rated food diary App and website. We track calories and 6 key nutrients – carbs, sugar, protein, fat, saturated fat and salt. Our mission is to give our members insight into what they are eating to empower them to make more informed food choices. We’ve been helping people achieve their weight management goals since 2005.Nutracheck
On the first morning of my liver shrinking diet, I made my way to the kitchen armed with my mobile phone and app open ready to make my first entry. Within the app, there is a range of products (over 250,000), ready for you to select, either by doing a manual search or by scanning the barcode. However, if the product is not listed you can add it and it will save for future use.
Fitness & Eating out tracking too
Not only does the app track your food, it also links to your fitness – so for me it is connected to my iWatch. Just like the food, you can search for your exercise and the app will calculate the calories used.
I decided to have a pre-op weekend away so this meant eating out – thankfully Nutracheck came to the rescue as it contains the nutritional value from many of the high street chains. While all around me ordered their burgers or pizzas I ordered my salad.
You can build your own recipes within the app and also support fellow Nutracheck users in the forums, so you are never alone on
After the free trial of seven days, I selected the App only option as that works perfectly for me. There is also the option of having website access. Currently (correct as of 21st Jan), Nutrcheck have a sale on with up to 30% of membership.
Initially, I downloaded this app to support me in my pre-op diet and thought once I had the operation that would be it. However, I have and will continue to use the app. It focuses the mind on what you are eating and provides a visible daily, weekly, monthly overview of your eating habits. There is certainly room for improvement in my diet and by using Nutracheck to support me I will achieve my health goals.
